The underfire fashion house has issued an apology for the controversies and promised to revise their collective way of working. Looking at the ad images, the social media statements, and the notice of lawsuit that followed, it seems that Balenciaga is trying to pass responsibility to those it hired to create these images. The CFO of bankrupt law firm Girardi Keese has been arrested on wire fraud charges with prosecutors alleging that 10 Million was stolen from the firm in a ‘side fraud’. The California State Bar has issued an open letter detailing the 40 years of complaints against Tom Girardi and finally, Federal Judge Durkin issued a scathing order calling the actions of Girardi “certainly criminal.” It’s been over a month since I have checked into the Girardi case, and it’s incredible how much breaking news there has been in this case.

When a key prosecution witness shows up at a convicted defendant’s house, what could possibly go wrong? Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani are both asking for New Trials based on a witness showing up at Holmes’ house. The court has since ordered a hearing and additional briefing on Holmes’ motion for a new trial and denied Balwani’s motion for a new trial. Balwani is asking for a continuance of his sentencing, and the court should be ruling on that soon. I am waiting to see what the prosecution is asking for in their sentencing memos late this month.

In a strange coincidence of timing, Hollywood is on trial at the same time; Harvey Weinstein, Danny Masterson, and Kevin Spacey. All three trials involve allegations that came forward during the height of the MeToo movement though the alleged assaults occurred years and sometimes decades prior. The Weinstein case is still in the early phases of the trial, pre-trial motions, and jury selection. That case is expected to start with opening statements and witnesses next week. The Masterson trial finished jury selection fairly quickly and moved to contentious opening arguments, and the first alleged victim is on the stand. Kevin Spacey’s civil trial, where the plaintiff is seeking $40 Million in damages, is now in the defense case, and Spacey has finished his testimony. That trial will likely be given to the jury late this week or early next week.

The lawsuits have been busy. Prince Harry, Sir Elton John, and others are suing The Daily Mail over some horrific allegations of criminal activity, including wiretapping phones. The UK media has some history with this which is wild. I will be very interested to see how this suit progresses; The Daily Mail has made a very strong statement about this suit, stating the allegations are false. Bethenny Frankel has sued TikTok, alleging that they allowed creators to use her videos to make ads for knockoff products. Bethenny is attacking the case from a copyright position which may be an attempt to get around Section 230 preventing a party from suing a platform for what a user posts. The heart of the suit is the posts of a particular user, which will create a problem for Frankel. I can’t wait to hear what you think of these suits.

Amber Heard’s lawyer Elaine Bredahoft has hired counsel to represent her firm in dealing with the Insurance litigation. Amber Heard’s insurance companies are still fighting over who is paying for the litigation and allude to paying for her appeal. The Appeal briefs aren’t due yet, and it will be interesting to see how the insurance litigation plays out. It’s possible that Heard will owe money back to her insurance company. If Heard owes her insurance company, they will have to get in line behind Johnny Depp for her money.

Missing millions, mistress jewelry, and several new lawsuits. The Girardi case continues to unfurl stunning allegations of theft, fraud, and opulent spending at the expense of clients. The court finds in one case that Erika Girardi doesn’t have actual knowledge of Tom Girardi’s spending in his law firm and the work he was doing with other lawyers. The ruling includes some quotes from her deposition, which is very interesting. The Bankruptcy trustee has sued some of the legal lenders that are now being sued multiple times, and the allegations keep getting wild. The level of fraud happening in this law firm is hundreds of thousands of dollars.

On September 17, 2020, Vanessa Bryant and Christopher Chester sued the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the Los Angeles County Fire Department regarding photos taken of their deceased family members following the fatal January 26, 2020, helicopter crash. After the trial, the jury awarded each plaintiff 15 million. The County is already making plans for the post-trial motions.

Britney Spears may be free from her conservatorship, but the fight isn’t over. She is still fighting for money and her dignity. Britney Spears’ father, James Spears, has been going back and forth with Britney through their lawyers over a number of discovery issues but the heart of it is the objections to the twelfth accounting. The twelfth accounting was the beginning of the end of the conservatorship. The objections largely regard how money was spent from Britney’s estate, including funds spent on former business manager Tri Star. How is Amber Heard paying for all this? We heard her testify that she paid over 6 Million Dollars defending the defamation lawsuit….but did she? Her insurance companies are fighting over who should pay for her legal defense and it has a lot of details. Furthermore, her insurance company New York Marine is suing her for a judgment, saying they don’t have to pay for her lawyers or her Judgement. There is also the question of the suspension bond, will Johnny Depp be able to go after Amber Heard for the $10 Million judgment? Judge A made clear any suspension bond would need to be the full amount of the judgment plus the 6% interest. It will be interesting to see where this goes from here.

On July 14, disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh was indicted for the murder of his wife and son. He is now facing 17 indictments totaling 85 charges. It is the most staggering case because it also involves a web of civil litigation regarding the death of Mallory Beach in a boating under the influence accident in a boat driven by now deceased Paul Murdaugh and the still under investigation death of Murdaugh housekeeper Gloria Satterfield and the staggering theft from her estate.
